Redskin soccer season over at the hands of Catholic
Loudon News Hearld, May 6, 2009
The Loudon Redskins fell 1-0 to the Catholic Irish Tuesday night, ending the season for the Loudon soccer team. "We had our chances to score and didn't take advantage of it," Loudon Head Coach Jim Paramo said after the game. The teams remained in a scoreless tie for much of the game, but the Irish finally found the net with just 20 minutes to go in the game. The Redskins defeated the dominant Catholic squad in the regular season, but couldn't keep up the success in the District 4(2A) tournament.  "It's hard," Paramo said of facing Catholic again. The Redskins will lose 10 seniors off this year's squad – Ryan Brennan, Matt Ward, Carlos Espinoza, Blake Everett, Mario Gonzalez, Edgar Gonzalez, Tommy Bright, Daniel Espinoza, Mario Cortez and Arturo Vega.
Redskin Soccer Wins 5-1
Loudon News Hearld, May 2, 2009
The Loudon Redskin soccer team clinched a three-way tie for first place in District 4(2A) with a 5-1 home win over Kingston Friday night. Carlos Espinoza scored three goals in the game and Fernando Zavala punched in two for the final tally. With the win, the Redskins ensured a three-way tie in the district with powerhouses Catholic and CAK. The tie ensured the Redskins a top three seed in the upcoming district tournament and a tie-breaker will have to determine when and where Loudon will next play. The Redskins will for sure open their district tournament Monday, however.

With a five-goal outburst, the Loudon Redskin soccer team clinched their 10th win of the season Tuesday night with a 5-2 win at home over Karns. The Redskins got goals from K.C. Rader and Edgar Gonzalez in the first half to lead 2-1 at the break, but watched the Beavers score quickly to tie the game in the second half. From there, however, it was all Loudon. The Redskins faithful had to watch a couple near misses first, however, as two Loudon shots glanced off the upper crossbar, narrowly missing a pair of goals. That only delayed the inevitable, however.

Carlos Espinoza knocked in a pair of goals – one with 24 minutes left and the second with just under 13 minutes left – to put Loudon ahead 4-2. Then, with less than two minutes left in the game, Fernando Zavala punched in the Redskins' final goal. “It was a good win, Karns is a good team,” Loudon Head Coach Jim Paramo said after the game. He added that Karns' numbers are down a bit on the soccer team right now, but is confident his team could have won with or without the smaller numbers.

With the win, the Redskins now only need to defeat Kingston Friday evening to clinch a three-way tie with CAK and Catholic for first place in the district. If the Redskins can defeat the Yellow Jackets, they'll be set up even better than Paramo feels they are now for the upcoming tournament. “I think we're on top of things.  The kids have been doing exactly what I've been telling them to do,” Paramo said. He added that his team has been working on controlling the flow of the game in recent matches, in preparation for the tournament games. “In the second half, that was pretty much what we were working on – the flow of the game,” Paramo added.

With their 2-0 win Wednesday night, the Loudon soccer team snapped a 17-year winless streak against Lenoir City. Mario Cortez and Jose Perez scored Loudon's two goals in the Redskins' home win, their first victory since 1992. “It's a good win for the kids,” Loudon Head Coach Jim Paramo said after the game.  “I'm happy for them.”

The Lenoir City side wasn't quite as boistrous. “Well, obviously, we're disappointed,” Lenoir City Head Coach Jesse Harris said. Speaking of the Barry Redmond Cup over the weekend, Harris said, “I was hoping to go into it with a winning record, but we're down right now . . . so we've got some work to do.”

The goal by Cortez came in the first half, sending Loudon into the break ahead 1-0. Less than eight minutes into the second half, however, Perez knocked in his goal to secure the Redskins' final tally. Loudon (7-1) will move on to play at Oliver Springs Tuesday, while Lenoir City (3-4-2) will visit Webb Monday evening. The Panthers are set to begin at 5:30 p.m., while the Redskins are set to start at 7 p.m.

Unbeaten Redskins enjoying early success

Before the season started, Loudon Head Soccer Coach Jim Paramo said his team would once again be in pursuit of Catholic and CAK in the standings. Well, one of those obstacles was passed Tuesday.

In a 1-0 decision, the Redskins defeated defending state champion Catholic.  The lone goal was scored by Mario Cortez with seven minutes left in the game. The Redskins came back Thursday night and struggled but were still able to dispatch Stone Memorial at home, 3-1.

Paramo said he can't put too much emphasis on one game, though.  "We cannot put one less than another because we might end up with a shocker," Paramo said. Though the coach admitted that lack of focus may have played a part in the team's strugges against the Panthers. "I think that really hurt us today, coming from Catholic and beating them.  I told them at the half, you guys have got too big of a head.  You need to settle down and start playing soccer." That lack of focus didn't appear to be an issue early, as a goal by Jose Perez with 15 minutes left in the first half put Loudon ahead.

Just before the half ended, however, the Panthers knocked in a goal of their own on a free kick to tie the game going into the break. After Paramo's talk, the Redskins took control, scoring seven minutes into the half, but the goal was wiped off. They came back 12 minutes later, however, and Edgar Gonzalez punched in the go-ahead score. The Loudon defense didn't allow much from there, as goalie Matt Ward made numerous stops for the Redskins in the final moments. The win was secured with seven minutes left in the game, when Loudon's Fernando Zavala knocked the third goal of the night through. "It was a tough game," Paramo said.  "They came out and played hard on us."

Paramo said the now 3-0 Redskins have a lot of promise heading into the remainder of the season. They're playing pretty good.  They're a good group," the coach said.

Loudon will be back on the field Wednesday at CAK.  Game time is set for 7 p.m.
