May 2009

by Loudon News Hearld

Loudon's Melissa Haun has been named the Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association (TSSAA) East Tennessees Cheerleading Coach of the Year.

Haun has coached the varsity football and basketball cheerleading squads at Loudon for seven years.  "Miss Haun goes above and beyond the call of duty with 'her' cheerleaders.  She not only has high expectations for team members, but also sets high standards for them in the classroom and within the community.  Melissa is a highly organized and structured individual.  Her communication skills are high and her cheerleaders are very well informed and organized with practice schedules, performances at ballgames and the community service that they participate in as a team," Loudon High School Principal Cheri Parish wrote in her nomination of Haun. Haun begins her cheerleading season in April as prospective cheerleaders begin tryouts for the team. Throughout the summer Haun hosts camps and retreats for her cheerleading team to both help younger, aspiring cheerleaders or to better themselves at the sport. Haun also teaches math and honor math classes at Loudon, is the sponsor of Mu Alpha Theta – the math honor society – and also sponsors a class each year.

Cheerleaders under the tutelage of Haun have cheered at colleges such as Maryville College, the University of Louisville, Middle Tennessee
State University, and the University of Tennessee. sees Cheerleading Coach of the Year.
