Back to school for Loudon High, after an extended summer break, students find changes lurking in every hall. Mr. John Bartlett, the school's principal has made a new change that has caused controversy between the students and faculty. One hour lunch, is it in the best interest of the students or will it cause problems? After speaking to some of the students and teachers it seems that they stand divided on the subject.
Those students, who believe this is a good idea, say they now have free time to interact with friends and study. Part of the faculty also believes this is a good idea, because those who cause disciplinary problems and those tardy serve detention during this time. Supporters of this change think that this allows for the students to blow off steam before afternoon classes, making them less likely to cause disturbances during class. These students and teachers feel that there is ample amount of time to eat and do all other tasks necessary for that particular day. This also allows for clubs to meet and discuss things without taken up valuable class time. The supporters makes a strong argument, and stand firm beside Mr. Bartlet and the school board for this new and improved lunch period.
Like any other change, there are those who oppose it or feel it is unnecessary. These teachers and students feel that an hour long lunch will cause more fights and will leave students in line and hungry. There are seven hundred plus student that attend Loudon High School, with only about three hundred seats, which leaves some out in the cold, so to speak. Some teachers oppose this because they believe that, though students deserve more freedom, there will be those who test the rules and leave campus, start fights, use unnecessary “PDA,” and use cell phones, when the rules clearly state that these are all against the handbook. Another good argument, but is it the right one?
Change, it is said to be good, but who can be sure? Two very strong arguments explaining just how great or how unrealistic one hour lunch may be. This is but one change that has provoked chaos among the student body as well as the faculty, no one is positive this is a good, but they are all willing to give it a chance. Only one question remains will this lunch divide or unify Loudon High School?
