After the Lady Irish's Addison Springer drained a three from near the top of the key to open the game's scoring, the Lady Redskins went on a 15-1 run in the next four minutes. They led by 12 as the first quarter came to an end, but quickly picked the offensive domination right back up in the second. Mardessa Hampton opened the quarter with a three and after Springer hit a free throw, the Lady Redskins accounted for the next 11 points.
They closed out the half with a 5-4 advantage on Catholic and enjoyed a 38-12 lead at the break. The Lady Irish finally got some offense going in the second half, but still had no answer for the Lady Redskin offensive attack. The hosts scored 22 in the third as each starter scored at least five points. Hampton led the way with seven in the third. After the third quarter ended with Loudon up 60-25, Head Coach Bryant Collins chose to send the starters to the bench for the entire fourth quarter and the reserves ran out the clock in the final period. Collins said he felt his girls are “playing a little better” than they did earlier in the season when they dropped both of their Hall of Fame games. “We didn't play worth a dime to start the year off, but we've started clicking a little bit. We're still not shooting as well as we can, but we are playing hard and that's really all you can ask for,” Collins explained. The entire game, the Catholic offense appeared baffled by the Lady Redskin full-court pressure and Collins said it came as no surprise to him.
“I felt our press could work. That's a lot of pressure to put on and I thought they did a good job,” he said. The team finished with 12 steals as Janel Menard, Kristen Miller and Kaycee Harvey led the way with two each. Hampton finished the game as the top scorer, dropping in 16 points on the night. Harvey followed with 14 and Jada Buckner tacked on 10. Caroline Johnson topped the Lady Irish with 14 points and Jenna Mire added 10. The Lady Redskins (3-1) will look to extend their three-game winning streak Thursday when they travel north to Scott County.

Late comeback attempt falls short for Lady Redskins at Oliver Springs

With 37 seconds showing on the fourth-quarter clock, Loudon's Jada Buckner stepped to the free throw line with a chance to bring her team within a point. The senior had just hit a layup and drew a foul and now had a chance to nearly complete an 11-point comeback that began early in the fourth quarter.
Buckner's attempt rolled off the rim and was rebounded by a Lady Bobcat. Loudon was forced to foul with 9.1 remaining in the game. One of the two free throws was good and the Lady Redskins were unable to get off a potential game-tying shot.
The sound of the buzzer meant the Lady Redskins would have to wait longer for their first win of the season as they fell at Oliver Springs 55-52 Friday night in the Bobcat Thanksgiving Classic.
“We're struggling right now. We just can't get our shots to fall,” were the words of Loudon Head Coach Bryant Collins after the game. Just six Lady Redskins scored in the game and the normally up-tempo, high-scoring offense posted just five points in the second period. The scoring was even for much of the early going, but a 12-4 run by Oliver Springs put the visitors at a disadvantage.
Three straight free throws by Jada Buckner and Mardessa Hampton cut the gap to four, but a bucket by Kasi Bilyen late in the first gave the Lady Bobcats a 17-11 advantage after one. Neither team could get much offense going in the second. Kayla Christopher opened the period with a field goal to increase the Lady Bobcat lead, but free throws by Buckner and a three by Kaycee Harvey cut the deficit to three at 19-16. A 7-0 run by the hosts rounded out the half, though, as the Lady Bobcats headed to the locker rooms up 26-16. The Lady Redskins overcame their scoring funk a bit in the third, knocking down seven consecutive points as Janell Menard and Buckner hit field goals and Harvey drained her second tray of the game. Cindel Howard was able to preserve some of the lead during the run, though, hitting a bucket to keep the lead at five midway through the third.
The teams traded baskets from there until, with 1:17 left and the visitors down four, the hosts ran off five straight points to end the quarter up nine. A quick bucket by Brooke Barger to open the fourth pushed the Lady Bobcat lead to 11 before the Loudon comeback began. Hampton then hit the second to last basket either team would see for the next 4:49 as the game turned into a battle of free throws. The Lady Redskins got the better of that battle as they knocked down 10 of their 12 charity tosses, while Oliver Springs players hit just seven of 14. Mixed in with the free throws was a field goal by Harvey, setting up an opportunity for her also hit the game-tying jumper with 2:25 showing on the clock.
The Lady Bobcats extended their lead once more, though, as they made three of their next four shots from the charity line, but Hampton hit a couple of her own to keep the game within one. Barger did her best to keep the Lady Redskins at arm's length, though, hitting a field goal and free throw to open the host lead back out to four before the final, failed game-tying attempt by Buckner. Christopher topped all scorers with 19 and was closely followed by Harvey's 17. The Lady Redskins (0-1) finished up the Bobcat Thanksgiving Classic Saturday.
